The gharial is one of only two species in the Gavialidae family. Historically, the gharial's range spanned rivers of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan. Females reach sexual maturity around 3 m in length (usually over 10 years old). This is the first crocodilian species to have been re-listed in this manner.
Mature females are 2.6–4.5 m (8 ft 6 in–14 ft 9 in) long, and males 3–6 m (9 ft 10 in–19 ft 8 in).
