In Alaska, winds blow strongest in winter, when households need electricity for heating the most, so wind power fit well with their customers’ needs. It is the only island in the Municipality of Anchorage, sitting three miles (5 km) off the city's Point Campbell, and nine miles (14.5 km) from downtown.
Measurements taken over the next several years reconfirmed the site's viability for producing commercial wind power. The turbines’ nacelles rise to 262 feet (80 m) above the ground, about the height of Anchorage's Robert B. Atwood Building, which is the city's second-tallest. Golden Valley set a target in 2005 to get 20% of its peak load electricity—power supplied when customer demand is highest—from renewable energy by 2014. The decreasing costs and growing availability of renewable power sources are making their adoption inescapable, and even major oil companies like BP have expanded into the industry.
