Interesting too to change the tale slightly to make the two half into one logic, the second half being the sequence of the first. It poses the question of how far will a hero go for fame and what are the consequences?
It has a few good points. I've read various translations and seen every film made of Beowolf - this version is OK at best. I was blown away. A good cast and very moody filming, but it does have that 'boring' low-budget feel to it. The film is a fairly accurate telling of the story but doesn't include the end of the poem where Beowulf fights the dragon when he's an old man, therefore ends with Grendel's mother. The 13th Warrior, which this occasionally imitates, is a much better recasting of the Beowulf story. Originally released in theaters in 2007, considering we are in 2018, it holds amazingly well after 11 years.
It was pretty shocking how a low budget movie with a great story and actors can work very well. Always the twist of making the heroes the villain and the villain the martyr. I remember how excited I was to see it in the theatre; and it has always stood up as an example for how to properly use the format since. After a while I finally decided the plot was about sweaty and nasty men thinking from the waist area and not really classic literature. I like the former but cannot see the necessity of the latter: the monk is surely there to remind us that "Beowulf" as we know it is actually a old heathen myth copied by English monks, who are widely suspected to have modified the original oral stories to make them fit their Christian vision. I guess if you play video games all the time, it looks normal, but I consider all-CGI characters to be more like cartoons than real people. Extremely impressive. I had seen '13th warrior'and thought it was very good-----THIS I thought was very bad!!!

With the cinematic success of `The Lord of the Rings' I suppose it would not be long before `Beowulf' also received the Hollywood motion-picture treatment, especially since Tolkien had mined the Anglo-Saxon poem `Beowulf' as one of his major sources.

I wanted to like it, but I couldn't get through ten minutes of it! The women tend to look the same; even the Angelina Jolie character looked like the queen and the other women. Beowulf arrives in the kingdom of Denmark to slay a monster known as Grendel who has been haunting the country. The fights, blood & Gore, and scenic environment made the movie really authentic. SO many other "takes" on the basic story are SO much better done.
