The new Connaught Grill, which has been open just over a week, is nothing like the old one, which closed 20 years or so ago.You wouldn’t even know it was in the same room. I had heard him giving his long spiel to the people in the “carriage” behind ours, and I didn’t want to hear it again.I cannot tell you what the food was like ( although the menu looked fine) as at this stage I’m afraid we decided to go the the lovely light and airy Connaught Restaurant instead.I would be surprised if this re-incarnation of a wonderful old institution catches on. It looks like an American Diner. It is just a tragedy how the Connaught has changed, and the Grill in particular. The staff was very nice but it cannot make up for the bad design and heavy menu. I also had the indignity, under a temporary Summer Chef while Monsieur Dunas was absent, of having afternoon tea sandwiches thrown at me as they weren’t up to scratch. Like a JApanese chophouse.
