The mountains you'll see in the distance are part of the Sawatch and Mosquito range. Motorists should expect slow speeds, lengthy travel times and potential delays of up to two hours if traveling over Independence Pass. The Maroon Bells might be the top leaf-peeping spot in all of Colorado.
There are tons of aspen groves on the mountains surrounding the lake, but you'll also see red and orange leaves speckled throughout. The Dallas Divide is a mountain pass about 12 miles west of Ridgway. The road is paved and not very steep. You'll see tons of yellow Aspen and Cottonwood trees as you follow the highway south through the hills. It also suggests drivers have detour maps handy and pack emergency food, water, and other supplies. St. Elmo and Cottonwood Pass make an excellent two-part leaf-peeping trip if you have a full afternoon! Cottonwood Pass between Gypsum and the Cattle Creek area north of Carbondale remains closed to through traffic, and is only open to local passenger vehicles. A word of caution, Gold Camp is a ROUGH road with steep grades, so a 4-wheel-drive vehicle with good brakes is highly recommended. One of the best short drives for fall colors from Colorado Springs is on Highway 67 from Divide to Cripple Creek!
Fall is officially here! If you have extra time, book a ticket on the famous Georgetown Loop Railroad! The pass summits at 10,007 feet, and despite the stretches of dirt/gravel, it's easy enough to drive for most vehicles.

Tucked away in the beautiful San Juan mountains between Ridgway and Telluride, Last Dollar Road is one of Colorado's most scenic fall color drives. The second, third, and fourth weeks of September will still probably be the best times to drive out for fall colors. The best view is along the waterfront on the east side of the lake. Crystal Mill is an old power station built back in 1893 located about 5.5 miles east of Marble. You can also navigate your GPS to the Alder Creek Trailhead, which is on Last Dollar Road. A really great weekend trip would be to take Independence Pass, which is just 20 minutes west of the lakes, all the way down into Aspen. ... Drivers should anticipate additional traffic on these routes. If you're going west near Ridgway and Telluride, you should take a drive over the Dallas Divide!
WESTBOUND I-70: Denver metro area motorists can travel on US 285 to US 50, and continue west to Grand Junction. If you're looking for a great spot to picnic, hike, and see fall colors, drive over to Mueller State Park!
Officials are asking motorists to refrain from using the pass for discretionary trips for the duration of the I-70 closure.
Drivers are urged to use caution when driving this road.
CDOT has paused some construction projects in order to accommodate detour traffic. Formerly a railroad line from Colorado Springs to Cripple Creek, Gold Camp Road is now a free public road popular with bikers and hikers.
Several scenes from John Wayne's "True Grit" were shot in this mountain pass, including the famous face down with Robert Duval. It's famous for beautiful scenic views along the way, that are exceptional in the fall when trees turn golden and red. Interstate 70 in Glenwood Canyon is closed between Mile Point 116 (Glenwood Springs) and MP 140 (Gypsum) due to the Grizzly Creek Fire.
High clearance, 4-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended, but the mill can also be reached by foot, mountain bike, or guided jeep tour. Through traffic should use the Colorado Department of Transportation approved detour routes, available at www.cotrip.org. Take your time, and pay strict attention to the road. Try to avoid going on Saturdays, and if you want to use your own car, just navigate your GPS to the Maroon Lake Trailhead. Aug. 22, 2020 - Beginning Sunday, Aug. 23, Cottonwood Pass will open for critical, local passenger vehicle traffic after a closure due to the Grizzly Creek Fire. According to Dr. Dan West, entomologist for the Colorado State Forest Service, stress from this year's drought will likely lead to most of the leaves changing a few days to maybe a week earlier than normal.
The pass is filled with tons of aspen and cottonwood groves and will give you a nice mix of yellow, red, and orange fall colors. Driving to and from Red Mountain Pass contains stretches of road with steep cliffs, sharp turns, and 8% grades. The mill sits on an outcrop above the Crystal River and has not been in use since 1917 when the Sheep Mountain Mine closed.
