If this adulatory "American Masters" production elides certain chapters of Angelou's biography, it nonetheless offers ample evidence of her commanding intensity and of her importance as an unwavering voice of the black experience.

The movie takes us to Paris in the 1950s. It's hard not to be inspired by a life this well lived.

Maya Angelou is one of my favorite writers/poets of all time and her book ‘Still I Rise’ published in 2001 shows once again Angelou’s incredible talent. Each verse is also accompanied by incredible art work done by the Mexican master, Diego Rivera. Early in Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise, poet Nikki Giovanni says of the film’s subject, “Maya was a dancer. She sang. As actress Alfre Woodard says, “I remember sitting down, opening a book and feeling like I was reading for the first time.”. There’s poetic justice in that.

A lovely portrait of who Angelou was behind closed doors. Sitting elegantly in her home in Wilmington, North Carolina, Angelou gives the movie its narrative traction. This is a documentary interested in breadth rather than depth, and on those terms it succeeds. “Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise” covers so much ground that it’s usually easy to forgive the filmmakers for not digging deeper.
