postcards from the edge movie review

20 de outubro de 2020 , por

Postcards From the Edge follows Suzanne over the few months in which she emerges from a drug-rehab clinic and moves in with her loving but impossibly self-centered mother (Shirley MacLaine), a former Hollywood actress who was a big star.

This one, too, is about the messiness of a mother-daughter bond, with MacLaine once again playing a well-meaning maternal pain in the neck. Suzanne runs into Dr. Frankenthal (Richard Dreyfuss), who had pumped her stomach after her last overdose, and he invites her to see a movie with him. characters and situations wither from lack of development for the sake of the central relationship, which is never wholly convincing.

And Streep and MacLaine make a touching pair of embattled misfits. With Meryl Streep, Shirley MacLaine, Dennis Quaid, Gene Hackman. [2], The film earned positive reviews from critics and currently holds an 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 32 reviews. She’s a well-known Hollywood actress who has never quite become a star, and that’s a fairly apt metaphor for the way she experiences her own life. MacLaine doesn’t overplay the domineering gorgon this time. There are some incomplete, dimly seen, unrealized scenes in the rehab center, and then desultory talk about offscreen AA meetings. The scenes in which she acts in an el-cheapo chase comedy capture the workaday absurdity of Hollywood moviemaking, the ho-hum mesh of illusion and reality. As their argument escalates, Jack implies that Suzanne was much more interesting when she was trying to function while she was on drugs. In a sense, there’s no difference: They’re both actresses to the core.

I'm not shocked that people think it's about me and my mother. TV Guide ranks Peak TV's finest offerings, Sign up and add shows to get the latest updates about your favorite shows - Start Now. Working on a film, Suzanne is so addled by a cocaine habit that her director, Lowell (Hackman), must threaten her life just to get her, focused. Directed by Mike Nichols.

But the movie captures — and celebrates — how easy it is to turn your problems into show biz. Your new favorite show is right here. View stories. Postcards From the Edge. Suzanne is meant to be an overgrown adolescent feeding off her own anxieties, and Streep gives her a comic radiance. Dr. Frankenthal tells her he's willing to wait until she is. Suzanne's, personal struggle is also contrasted throughout with Doris's nonstop, unrepentant boozing. But while POSTCARDS is entertainingly observant of the filmmaking scene, too much time is taken up with the cliched, mother-daughter drama at the film's core.

Suzanne rushes to her hospital bedside where the two have a heart-to-heart talk while Suzanne fixes her mother's makeup and arranges a scarf on her head to conceal the fact she bloodied her wig in the accident. "[3] In the DVD commentary she notes that her mother wanted to portray Doris but Nichols cast Shirley MacLaine instead. "[3] He added "Carrie doesn't draw on her life any more than Flaubert did.
