Most of my research before last year was just based on the road through the mountains, not the trails and such that branched off of it. I would recommend that over shrine pass. Our plans for Colorado next year are a bit different, but we still plan to go out of our way to drive through on Shrine Pass road. The dirt road is a bit rocky so I would recommend some ground clearance, but when dry most 2 wheel drive cars should be fine. After making it the whole way thru, I definitely wouldn't recommend it to anyone that doesn't have a proper truck or SUV -- especially in the fall months.In many areas of the road, the dirt path was muddy from melting snow. My wife and I traveled this road in order to see the aspens in late September. So my wife and I set off in our 4 dr Toyota Corolla. In August I drove this one way from Vail Pass to the town... One of our favorite drives in all of Colorado, Vail Pass to Julia's Rest, then turn around. The Shrine Pass trail is a nice 4 mile RT hike resulting in arguably the best view in the region. I went with a few friends on my first dispersed camping trip (drive off the side of the road and set up camp) last year here off Shrine Pass Road. But most of the drive is done thru narrow woody roads and you never get a magical scenic moment. Wild flowers were beautiful.
We came into this area after dark and found most of the sites full. Was an easy leisurely drive over the 11094 ft. In August I drove this one way from Vail Pass to the town... Avoid in the fall season if you don't have a SUV. The road in fact then gets better and by the time we got to the Vale Pass side my wife had taken over driving and she was moving right along. Only problem is that the last 3-5 miles before you get to Red Cliff, the road is very rough with rocks sticking up and potholes. We saw more traffic on the road this year, but still that only amounts to about 5 cars in several hours.

Pass... beautiful drive and nice break from I-70 Road very rugged from there to Red Cliff. It was in September when the aspens had all turned golden yellow, and we had a blast. The bridge over the Eagle River at Red Cliff is a beautiful photo op, and highway 24 back to Vail is a great drive with plenty of things to see.

It was still a great stop on the way through Shrine Pass road. Can be done in a car you don't really care for. Before last year’s trip I had to do the research on Shrine Pass Road to find out if it was really worth doing. I would recommend that over shrine pass. The research I did before submitting the entry ranged from saying you could do the drive in a passenger car to some websites saying you needed a 4 wheel drive vehicle. We went of the trail a little further but then the trail started to look precarious so we turned back. Easy access to trailhead, although the road is a bit "bumpy" and more suited for trucks than cars. This year we gained several inches of ground clearance in our SUV.
