storyville jazz

Perhaps the greatest of them all was Storyville, the Boston club operated by George Wein in the 1950s. It was only a 20-minute walk to Izzy Ort’s on Washington Street, but the look and feel of Storyville was a world away from that raunchy downtown joint. Wein presented the best in jazz regardless of style—everything from piano soloists to big bands, and from bebop to Dixieland. Old standbys Garner, Vaughan, Mulligan, and Shearing skipped Storyville in 1960. Business was so bad that the whole operation shut down for five weeks in the spring. There is a footnote. Almost every significant jazz artist of the 1950s, as well as a handful of the decade’s top comics and folk singers, played at Storyville. It was obvious that you didn’t go to Storyville to socialize. George, energetic and ambitious, was 25 in October 1950 when he opened Storyville in the Copley Square Hotel. Like most clubs then, Storyville closed for the summer. Charlie Parker was scheduled to play on March 12, 1955—the night he died.

There isn’t room to mention everyone. His vision came from port cities that legalized prostitution and was officially established on July 6, 1897. In June, 1948, WNAC-TV began broadcasting from the Hotel. There isn’t even room to mention all of the “important” ones.

In 1950[9] it was relocated again to the ground floor of the Hotel Buckminster in Kenmore Square. He wrote a newspaper column, spun records as a deejay, and taught jazz history at Boston University. There isn’t room to mention everyone. 9,460 for storyville jazz 19,300 for storyville, and if you ask 27,628,760 people to define jazz, you will get as many answers! That sent the message that Storyville was anything but a dive bar. And these weren’t one-nighters. Storyville was the right place at the right time, but times change and tastes change. The music we share is brought to life by some of the most talented musicians in the world.

Richard Vacca is the author of The Boston Jazz Chronicles: Faces, Places, and Nightlife 1937–1962 (Troy Street Publishing, 2012). Said Wein in 1966: The thing about Storyville, is that it was one of the very few jazz clubs in the country to give the musicians a fair shake. People still got dressed up to go out in the 1950s, and men wore jackets, ties were optional. The photo above shows more demolition on Basin Street and beyond in the 1950's. He produced concerts. He named it after the New Orleans red light district where many believe  jazz was born. The thirty-eight block area was bounded by Iberville, Basin Street, St. Louis, and N. Robertson streets. That’s the thumbnail sketch. Though developed under the proposed title The District, the eventual nickname Storyville originated from City Councilman Sidney Story, who wrote the legislation and guidelines to be followed within the proposed neighborhood limits. But what made Storyville such a great club? George brought one more thing to Storyville: his musician’s sensibilities. [12], "Compared to the other clubs in town, listening to a jazz musician at Storyville is like sitting at home with a pair of earphones"— Nat Hentoff, 1953 (WMEX Announcer, host of Storyville broadcasts[13][14], Many jazz legends made live radio broadcasts from the club, especially at the Hotel Buckminster, and many audio recordings from these sessions are still available.[15][16][17][18][19][20]. [57][58][59][18], The space that housed Storyville at Hotel Buckminster in Kenmore Square is now occupied by a Pizzeria Uno restaurant. Storyville was an artistic success, but it was not a financial one. But Storyville was hurt when those top attractions outgrew nightclubs and went into the concert halls. [46][47][11], In 1953, Storyville was relocated to the Copley Square Hotel, at street level. The Storyville crowd was largely white. Some of those establishments—not the Copley Square—were still not admitting blacks as paying customers in that decade. You can reach him at [email protected].
