Looks like I was getting about 3.5 hours of sleep. Then I headed up the steep, loose east ridge of Hagerman Peak. Snowmass Lake, at 10,980' elevation is on the east. That was spooky. The best terrain was consistently 100-200 feet below the ridge. I crawled into the cab of my truck, thankful I hadn’t rolled up my sleeping bag this morning. We scrambled the south face of Hagerman Peak, a Colorado Centennial Peak with an elevation of 13,841'. Here the trail was quite overgrown with flowers, plants, and trees. My right foot was healthier than my left; I couldn’t press down on the pedal very hard, so I drove slowly, but I made it. Then the lights went out. I made it here and unfortunately cliffed out yet again… but I could see where I needed to be: That goat trail should get me down. We saw plenty of people working their way up and down Snowmass Mountain from both the Lead King basin side and the Snowmass Lake side. The only problems I can foresee would be passing other vehicles. I couldn’t find them. My old college roommate Josh and I had talked about trying to nab the first winter ascent of this peak back in winter of 2011/2012, but never made it happen. My advice is to descend lower than the saddle, and then take the scree line up to where the trail connects with the east route. Overall though, it was sad to see loads of other people who were clearly living in fear of the coronavirus and refused to even acknoledge the existence of anyone else around. Tons of snow and no way I could see to begin from the summit. The snow ended just at the waterfall and surprisingly I crossed the waterfall pretty easily here and headed down.
