As with all of the American Recordings series, the sound here is quite sparse, with Cash employing the services of guitarist Mike Campbell and keyboard player Benmont Tench from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, as well as a number of well-established blues/country guitar players such as Larry Perkins, Norman Blake, Randy Scruggs and Marty Stuart. This was such a compelling rendition that I had to investigate further, and now own all his recording collaborations with Rick Rubin, of which American Recordings was the first. The choice of songs is extremely varied and brilliant, often with their minimalistic approach/arrangement manages to shed a whole new meaning for me and the songs are fresh/new again; their quality and meaning often surpasses the original arangements; as far I am concerned anyway. This is yet another example of compressing dynamic range--increasing the volume of soft sounds so that they are as loud as loud sounds, and then setting the entire mix to as loud as the medium will allow. You see every scene and feel every feeling , that John was feeling when he wrote the songs, why he wrote the song, and in his performance of the song. I love this, and Rick Rubens production, it done more to capture the Johnny Cash that I knew personally and loved. The sleeve that comes with the record is not poly lined, so make sure you have an extra one at hand. It is the third album in Cash's American series.
