The author actually managed to make the whole plot incredibly dull. The beginning was really strong and kept me hooked untill halfway through the book. In 1990 the IRA terror campaign had been going on for two decades, and in that year alone, the year Brian Moore published this compelling repudiation of violence, there were almost 400 IRA attacks which killed 30 soldiers and police and injured 340. Brian Moore’s suspenseful novel LIES OF SILENCE grips the reader and challenges the mind. Michael offers to drive Peg home and tells us how Peg does not like him. He puts his wife?s life, Moira, at risk if he informs on the IRA. Brian Moore paints a beautifully ugly image of the trouble in 80’s Belfast with its interesting landscapes and dark fearful undertones. Lies of Silence is very much a book of its time.
