She had requested to work with Cody, eager to learn from his well-known investigative skills, and now she has betrayed the very man whom she wanted as a mentor. I really enjoyed the first Cody Hoyt novel from CJ Box--an interesting character with an interesting way of doing things outside the standard Joe Pickett (another good character) morals. I will read the next Joe Pickett book with my fingers crossed. Who would they look for to rescue them? That meant they had thumbed a ride or made arrangements for a pickup later. Two teenaged sisters traveling on their own between divorced, distracted parents disappear when the oldest sister takes a detour to visit her boyfriend. Before he could swing his rig over into her lane and force her off the highway she stomped on her accelerator and shot ahead. He'd arrived early to the truck stop, an hour before dark. When he was able to catch back up with her in the passing lane she looked up and their eyes met for a brief second.

Sort of like a story that takes place on an island in the ocean can't help but be affected by the water in many ways-- overt or subtle. What was the point?

Events jump out like the sudden bark of a jackhammer. On a long, dark, lonesome stretch of Montana highway, they encounter a long-haul trucker for whom road rage is an appetizer, warming him up for the murderous, maniacal main course. His anticipation built throughout the day as he rolled west.
She was fairly new in the job, and her success in the role seemed to be explained by her getting angry. More precisely, they feared his legend, the idea of him.
Even if the plot twist hadn't happened, this book still left a bad taste.

I don’t do spoilers but this had one intense moment that floored me! Then I realized that I enjoyed CJ Box's writing and his characters. His lightweight Taurus 738 TCP semiauto in .380 ACP. Certainly, there is a lot of implied violence and some actual violence but the disturbing part is the threatened violence (which, thankfully, never gets explained in detail). I would give this 5 stars except I have issues with the Beartooth Highway being a central part of the story.

After I finished this book I felt like I needed a shower. In an oblong, hard, and hinged box once used for sunglasses was a syringe filled with Rohypnol.
