Colin St John Wilson’s stately yet accessible design incorporates fine materials and a generous display of public art. Wilson relied heavily on natural light, which he believed, not only keeps Readers awake but keeps them in touch with nature: the time of the day, the weather, the seasons. Only those lucky enough to have a Reader’s Pass could enter past this point. These give a sense of scale to this vast space so that your line of vision can pass gradually from these objects, before taking in the rest of the hall.
This will enable it to go on flourishing as a dynamic public building, in which appropriate change is welcomed. Daylight pours in from the skylights and the windows set into the ceiling, and reflects off the floor. Even in today’s digital age, there is a clear future for these buildings.
