The delight is how the tale builds through the perfectly phrased use of language and character. However, when father and son attend the lecture of an Indian Swami, followed by a conversation with Dean Spanley at their club, their relationship begins to change in a way nobody could expect.

The relationship between the father and his "disappointing" younger son is a central theme, with past life regression elements thrown in, although not entirely what one would expect. One of the best movies I have seen in years. I have seen it 5 or 6 times and I discover something new with each viewing. At first we couldn't make out what was going on except that Peter O'Toole was wonderful in his part as a crusty old gentleman. I've recommended this to so many people and it is hard to talk about without giving too much away, but this is a tale of a father who loses his son in the Boer war and is struggling to come to terms with that. I think everyone should love this quirky movie.

How many care for really clever dialog as opposed to vulgarities? Right now I think one can not get a DVD in the U.S. format, but can only stream it (through Amazon, thank goodness, since I'm a Prime member - I purchased the film and now can watch it over and over). It very deservedly won almost all the the Film Critic's awards. A funny, intelligent and delighfully adult fairytale set in Edwardian England, Dean Spanley will be unlike anything else that you've seen lately.
If possible, I would give this film 10 stars. Dunsany was a gifted crafter whose imagination was only matched by his picturesque and engaging narrative. Set in the early 1900s the key characters in this delightful movie are Peter O’Toole’s irascible, cantankerous septuagenarian grouch, his dutiful son (Jeremy Northam) and an affable bland local clergyman (Sam Neill) who has an open-minded view on reincarnation, where after imbibing his favourite tipple (Hungarian Tokay wine) seems to lucidly visit a previous life, describing in fascinating detail the joys of being a Welsh Spaniel.
